sea glass - drilling.jpg

Drilling sea glass involves keeping both the sea glass & the drill bit under water to keep them both cool. (see above) A diamond bit is used because the glass is so hard & easily shattered. A large hole is accomplished by continuously increasing the size of the bit each time. (see blue sea glass above)

What is SEA GLASS & what is TUMBLED GLASS?   There is a huge difference!

SEA GLASS of course is broken bits of bottles that have been tumbled by the sand in the ocean.  Over many years these bits become polished to a soft opaque luminous tone.  The striations & cracks with imbedded sand develop on the surface from exposure to the movement of the sea.

I use only authentic sea glass in my jewelry that I have collected over many years on the beaches of Maui.

TUMBLED GLASS is entirely different.  It is glass that has been put into a rotary tumbler to smooth the edges of the shards.  It can be bought in most hobby stores. It is easy to tell the difference between tumbled glass & authentic sea glass as the tumbled glass is perfectly smooth with no nicks or striations or imbedded sand.
